Photo Essay: Pittsburgh Steelers Nation Worldwide

Have you ever met a Pittsburgh Steelers fan? I’m sure you have. Simply put, we are everywhere. My father once joked that people could go deep into the Amazonian rainforest and they would still somehow manage to find a Pittsburgh Steelers fan somewhere along the way. There is some truth to that, though.

If you take a look at this map, you’ll find that Pittsburgh Steelers fans roll deep. While that might not impress a fan from a rival city, it’s certainly a prideful anecdote for us. In addition to countless locations throughout the United States, there are Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase bars in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, China, Japan, the Philippines, Peru, Brazil, Italy, Venezuela, Portugal, Germany, France, Austria, Ireland and England, to name a few. There are even two spots in New Zealand! During my six years in Chicago, I frequented the Dark Horse Tap (one of the six Steelers bars in the city) on game days. I formed a bond with other fans over the years – we laughed, we screamed, we shared stories; we shared pieces of ourselves all because of our love of the team.

You see, I’ve never known any other type of life. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA – a city known for its hometown pride and fanatical fans. My elementary school played the Pittsburgh Polka and Pittsburgh Steelers fight song in between classes during the Super Bowl playoffs each year. People across town were always dressed in black and yellow or wearing a jersey from one of our respective teams no matter the season.

One of the staples of Pittsburgh’s football culture is our rally towel, nicknamed The Terrible Towel. It was introduced to the fanbase by sports announcer Myron Cope in 1975 and has since remained an essential accessory for fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers across the world.

The tiniest Pittsburgh Steelers fans.

The tiniest Pittsburgh Steelers fans.

I left my hometown nearly 10 years ago, but I’ve carried this pride with me across the globe. While I have yet to make a pit stop at any Pittsburgh Steelers establishments outside the US, I’ve supported the Steeler Nation in another way. In honor of this year’s 2016-2017 NFL season, I want to show my global support for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Here we go!

Some very cool destinations! Pictures are great and it’s very clear you’re a Steeler’s fan 🙂 I would like to hear the story about the towel, however.

i must say this is a great idea to carry the banner and take photographs of it in all the places that you have been to. Its a great way to show support and to spread the news far and wide. i was recently given this idea by a dear friend of mine although to not carry a banner but to carry my beloved rabbit and take a photo with him everywhere I go.

I hope you’re still carrying your rabbit around! Cute!

The first pic is very cute. 🙂

Looking at you, I wonder if I could have carried something to every place I travel. I guess, it’d have been difficult for me. 🙂

Nice amazing shots . Some of these places I have been to.

Thanks a lot! It’s easy for me to carry this as it’s just a small towel and folds up easily.

I love that you have taken photos in some of the most beautiful places in the world with “The terrible Towel”. As I am from England, I have never heard of the Pittsburgh Steelers but I have now. You rock!

Thanks! They’re not having their best season, but I love them regardless!

This is amazing! Although I don’t really give a shit about football ( no offense and please don’t condemn me haha) these pictures are awesome! I love when people have such a love for something, and you obviously have not only a love for traveling but for your team, and you can mesh the two together all over the world! I have seen multiple people with chalk boards or signs that they hold up in pictures but never a football towel! Great idea!! 🙂

Thanks so much! I totally understand and no offence taken!

This is cracking me up and making me ashamed of not thinking to do the same with Philly (I guess we don’t really do the towels as much as you guys, even Natasha has one and she’s not even a big football fan!). Sports pride runs DEEP in Pennsylvania. I’m stilling waiting for the day we have an Eagles vs. Steelers Super Bowl!

    • November 19, 2016 / 1:46 am

Does Philadelphia have a towel? The pride definitely runs deep in Pittsburgh – there’s no other sports city quite like it.

Great idea and no need to watermark your amazing photos 🙂
If ever I would see that “terrible towel” then that would be you… :)))
More photos, more places to be explored with your unique buddy…
