Photo Essay: A weekend in Hong Kong

Photo Essay: A weekend in Hong Kong

A few weeks before my 26th birthday last year, I decided I wanted to do something special for myself. I knew almost immediately that this gift to myself would be a trip of some sort. Luckily for me, my birthday happened to be a few weeks shy of Chuseok, also known as Korea’s Thanksgiving. Since I had a few days off during the national celebrations, I immediately picked up my phone and began perusing the SkyScanner mobile app.

After much deliberation, I decided upon Hong Kong, as it’s always been of interest to me and isn’t too far from Seoul. This was my first solo trip abroad, and I couldn’t have been happier to see if I could mentally survive this personal challenge. I’d always wanted to travel solo, but was fearful of the idea of loneliness or not being able to navigate myself.

One app I found super helpful is the MTR Mobile app. It helped me navigate the city on my own without missing a beat. The MTR Mobile app doesn’t require WiFi, which is an excellent feature for travelers, too.

As it turns out, I had a blast! This trip, albeit a short one, helped me learn to fully enjoy my own company and reinstated that I can (and will!) achieve any goal I set for myself. Sure, I got lost once or twice, neither time being that big of a deal. In fact, one of the instances led me to discover Hong Kong’s Mid-Autumn Festival – a beautiful event featuring lanterns and traditional Chinese dragon dances. I will always look back on this trip fondly and would love to visit Hong Kong again in the future!

I wish we had a chance to visit China while we were in Asia. It’s just going to be one of those trips we are going to have to take after we retire. Thanks for showing me a great app to use though!

What a great collection of photos! You captures some beautiful details.

I’ve done a lot of traveling by myself here in the States – always said that if I was going to wait for someone to go with me then I might wait all my life. Every trip I took was a lot of fun for me. I’ve always enjoyed wandering & finding new destinations.

Hong Kong is such a great city and I’ve been there too many times I can count! Every time I go, there’s something new to see and places I haven’t been to yet – even though it’s a city! The food is great and the locals are super nice! 🙂

I was just in Hong Kong haha. Your photos are wonderful, I’m especially like the views from the cable car. Vi took the bus up to the big Buddha as I was trying to keep costs low. Also, the view at Victoria peak at night was also really nice. Good for you on your first solo travel.
